Summer time is rolling around and basketball camp flyers are going to be everywhere, from schools to recreation centers, to light poles on the sidewalk. Thousands of kids from ages 5–18 will be participating in some basketball camp this summer. After you sign up and pay the participation fee, there are a few things you will want to take care of in preparing for basketball camp and walking into the gym for the first day. Follow these instructions, and you’ll be ready to take on the competition at basketball camp in no time.
1. Get the right gear: Those old shoes that you wore all school year won’t cut it for basketball camp. Not saying that you have to go spend $100 on a pair of shoes, but some nice new gear like some basketball shoes and some shorts will be a necessity for basketball camp. T-shirts should not be too much of a hassle, as you probably already have some and the camp will almost certainly provide a T-shirt for the participant.
2. Work out before you go: Basketball camp’s priority is about developing your skill, but it is also about competition too. You want to be at your best, and get better every day at camp. Doing a couple of sets at the weight bench and running a few laps before camp starts won’t hurt.
3. Get into the habit of drinking water: If you’re like a lot of kids/teenagers then you probably enjoy your share of sugary drinks. Well part of camp is going to require you to be as physically fit as possible. This means eating healthily and drinking lots of water—70% of your body is made of water, and you’ll be sweating a lot of it out of your body. Getting in the habit of drinking a lot of water is a good idea in preparation for basketball camp, as well as a generally good idea for life.
4. Play basketball: You’re going to camp to get better at playing basketball, right? Don’t let the first day of camp be the first time you’ve shot a basketball in weeks. Go to the local gym or park and shoot for a few hours every day to prepare for camp. If you care about your game then it will show to the coaches at camp, and they’ll take more time to help you develop into the player that you want to be.
